Long COVID – the (im)perfect storm

Many people who recover from COVID exhibit a normal immune response and recovery pattern; life goes back to normal.

For others, they are left with serious long term effects which we have come to describe as Long COVID. This could affect as many as 80% of those who become infected with COVID (2).

These sufferers are defined as having symptoms three months or more after contracting COVID, regardless of the severity of the initial infection. They report such symptoms as respiratory, cardio, immune health, and other complications. They also experience milder conditions such as fatigue, weakness, a general unwell feeling, digestive complaints, skin issues, hair loss, cognitive impairment, headaches, sore throat, and more.

Normal immune response includes the release of cytokine and chemokine’s into our bodies in a controlled and targeted way to fight infection and disease. Studies show that following exposure to COVID, in patients with a dysfunctional immune response, many experience a massive cytokine and chemokine release, referred to as the ‘cytokine storm’ (1). Basically, the body has a HYPER immune response, creating an out-of-control storm of these chemicals. This state appears to contribute to the development of symptoms associated with Long COVID (3). The storm may be over, but the recovery work must now commence.
